The US “Culture Wars” and the April 1917 Decision to Enter World War I: Origins and Implications
The visit that US president Donald Trump makes to Paris next month (his second trip to France since becoming president in January 2017) serves as an occasion for him and his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, to mark the centenary of the Armistice of 11 November 1918. That truce brought to a close the first instance of direct American military involvement in the European balance of power, on the side of France. This presentation takes a new look at the decision of Woodrow Wilson to break the longstanding taboo against using American military might in a European setting, and argues that the American “culture wars” of a century ago played an important, yet heretofore only dimly understood, part in the intervention decision of April 1917.
